Édouard Manet once called still life “the touchstone of painting”. The tradition of the subject can be traced throughout art history and has been popular across period, cultures and movements. A genre of art treated by the greatest painters, such as Buffet , or yet Renoir, as a relatively neutral basis for formal experiment and to emphasise their personal touches.
