Biography

Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Russian-French artist celebrated for his vibrant and emotive works that seamlessly blend elements of Eastern European folklore, Jewish culture, and modern art. Born Moishe Shagal on July 7, 1887, in Vitebsk, Belarus (then part of the Russian Empire), Chagall was the eldest of nine children in a modest Jewish family; his father worked as a herring merchant.

In 1911, Chagall moved to Paris, immersing himself in the city's burgeoning art scene and associating with contemporaries such as Amedeo Modigliani and Fernand Léger. During this period, he developed his distinctive style, characterized by dreamlike imagery, bold colors, and a fusion of Cubist, Symbolist, and Fauvist influences. Notable works from this era include "I and the Village" (1911), which reflects his early exploration of personal and collective memory through art.

Throughout his career, Chagall's art was deeply influenced by his experiences of displacement and exile, especially during the turbulent periods of World War I, the Russian Revolution, and World War II. These experiences infused his work with themes of longing, resilience, and a profound connection to his heritage. His diverse body of work encompasses paintings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries, and fine art prints, showcasing his versatility and innovative spirit.

Bailly Gallery honors Marc Chagall's enduring legacy by featuring his works in their exhibitions, alongside other masters of the 19th and 20th centuries. Through curated selections, the gallery offers art enthusiasts and collectors the opportunity to engage deeply with Chagall's unique artistic vision, which continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
