What defines true beauty in art?
Up until the end of the 19th century, whether it was in design, fashion, or fine art, beauty was synonymous with richness and intricate detail.
But at the dawn of the 20th century, artists asked the question, what if true beauty lies not in detail, but in the essence? A new movement was born. It was called abstraction.
English sculptor Henry Moore was a pioneer of this movement. And in our sculpture, largely influenced by Cézanne’s les Grandes Baigneuses , Moore captured the sensuality of the female figure.
And by simplifying and smoothing the lines, he evoked something purer and maybe stronger. So, what is true beauty? For Moore, it was not what is added, but what remains when all is stripped away.
