Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) Danish, French

Биография
Artist Camille Pissarro (also known as Jacob Abraham Camille Pissarro) was a Danish-French painter born in Saint Thomas in 1830. Although Pissarro experimented with other styles, he is predominately known for his Impressionist paintings. He is also well known for his landscapes and Camille Pissarro’s most famous paintings, such as ‘Jalais Hill,’ ‘Pontoise’ and ‘Road to Versailles at Louveciennes,’ that helped make him a leading figure in the movement.
With the exception of his time at boarding school in France, Pissarro enjoyed a comfortable bourgeois lifestyle in the West Indies until he was 22. It was then that he moved to Caracas with his first serious artistic influence, Danish Painter Fritz Melbye.
Pissarro then moved to Paris in 1855, where the pursed his art studies in earnest. Not only did he enroll in the École des Beaux-Arts and Académie Suisse, but he also studied under a succession of masters including Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, and Charles-François Daubigny. Most art historians consider Corot to be Pissarro’s most important early influence, which is supported by Pissarro listing himself as a Corot’s pupil in the early Paris Salon catalogues.
Throughout his career, Pissarro worked in close proximity to other artists. During the 1860s, he participated in the Salon des Refuses with Edouard Manet, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and others. At the end of the decade, he moved to Louveciennes, where he worked with Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley.
After spending a couple of years in London to escape the Franco-Prussian War, Pissarro settled in Pontoise. As he had done throughout his career, Pissarro opened himself to new ideas by welcoming and working with younger artists who often sought his advice.
Eye problems forced Pissarro to abandon outdoor painting in the last years of his life, but he continued to work in his studio until his death in 1903. Pissarro lived long enough to see the start of Impressionist’s fame and influence, as well as the growth of critical appreciation for his work along with a growing number of young artists naming him as a major influence.
